Animal tip no. 11/2011: Getting rabbits fit for the winter

Download (925 KB)
Rabbits overwintering in an outdoor enclosure? That works –- according the experts from the Fressnapf specialist retail chain. But very important here:

  • Rabbits should not be kept in less than pairs.

  • The animals know the seasonal rhythms, living as they do outdoors from springtime at least.

  • Avoid draughty positions and dampness by insulating and weatherproofing everything well. The sleeping den must be insulated on all sides and laid with dry straw and hay. You should roof over a part of the run and provide wind protection.

  • Rabbits need a lot of exercise to brave the cold. Allow around six square metres for two to three animals.

  • Apart from diversification in the enclosure using roots, for instance, they need high-energy food and lukewarm water – always fresh – throughout the winter.

  • Never occasionally bring your bunnies into the warmth of the house. If it becomes extremely cold, you can put them in an unheated room such as a garage, a cellar or garden hut.

Well prepared for the cold season

Rabbits can be kept in the outdoor enclosure even during the winter months. But the enclosure must be made appropriately winter-proof.
